“Sculptural Elements”

This blue indigo project is a wall sculpture that I began working on October 18th. It was completed on November 25th. The title is: “Sculptural Elements”

During the past year I began experimenting with fabric manipulation using pleating and smocking techniques. Some of those pieces are included in this final composition.

To start, I made several small compositions which included different indigo dyed fabrics. I have dyed these pieces over several years, in workshops as well as in my own studio.

My abstract 3-dimensional patchwork wall piece entitled “Sculptural Elements” combines Indigo, Amber and Butterflies. 

Sculptural elements such as origami butterflies, pleated and smocked upcycled table napkins are in the spotlight. I have replaced the utilitarian uses of the napkins with a focus on the manipulation of the shibori and indigo dyed  fabric. 

This artwork explores the relationship between organic and geometric forms, light and shadows, 3-dimensional textile work and patterns.

Being a Latvian-Canadian, this work blends traditional Latvian culture (Amber) with natural dyes. As part of my new body of work, the theme of Butterflies and their life cycle is an ongoing exploration in my textile work.
