Traditional Japanese Shibori stitch resist adds unique elements, which make this medium weight cotton tunic a striking addition to a discerning woman’s wardrobe
All of my naturally dyed items are designed and hand dyed, by myself, in my small studio, in central Ontario, Canada. Made with care and passion, each individual item is unique. This tunic is a completely exclusive piece of clothing.
What is a resist dye?
“Resist dyeing is a term for a number of traditional methods of dyeing textiles with patterns. Methods are used to “resist” or prevent the dye from reaching all the cloth, thereby creating a pattern and ground. The best-known varieties today include tie-dye and batik.” This resist dyeing is also known as “shibori”.
The pattern in this beautiful piece of clothing is organic in appearance and can not be duplicated, when using this technique.
I consider my tunics to be works of wearable art and as such, that is how I create them.
Hand dyed items, such as this tunic take much time and effort. Each dye colour is prepared separately and requires a minimum of one hour in the dye pot.
Cherry, logwood, cochineal, madder, osage orange natural dyes on cotton tunic
This particular tunic was dyed in separate baths of cochineal and madder dyes. Prior to dyeing, it was shibori resist stitched and also eco printed. Each process is done separately.
Due to the nature of natural dyes, the colours vary in different lighting conditions. Please allow for some slight imperfections that are the result of the hand dyeing process.
This is a perfect gift for a special friend or for yourself. My customers have described my naturally dyed items as eye-catching and desirable
