This Indigo cotton tunic with leaf design looks amazing with leggings, wide kimono style pants or skirts of various lengths. The blue of the Indigo is of a fairly light shade, while the sections with shibori stitch resist are white. The stitching is similar on both the front and the back of the tunic.
Made with care and joy, each individual item is unique
It is a completely exclusive piece of clothing. Working in my small studio, in central Ontario, Canada, all naturally dyed pieces are designed and hand dyed, by myself.
What is a resist dye?
“Resist dyeing is a term for a number of traditional methods of dyeing textiles with patterns. Methods are used to “resist” or prevent the dye from reaching all the cloth, thereby creating a pattern and ground. The best-known varieties today include tie-dye and batik.” This resist dyeing is also known as “shibori”.
The organic pattern in this beautiful piece of clothing can not be duplicated, when using the natural dye and shibori technique. I consider my tunics to be works of wearable art and as such, that is how I create them.
Hand dyed items, such as this Indigo tunic with nui shibori stitch take much time and effort.
Dye baths are prepared separately and each dye requires a minimum of one hour
Indigo dye works differently than other natural dyes. In the case of Indigo the fabric is dipped into the Indigo vat many times, for varying lengths of time. Prior to dyeing, I stitched the design through the two layers of the tunic, so that the designs on the front and back are similar.
Due to the nature of natural dyes, the colours vary in different lighting conditions and they change over time. That is the beauty of the natural dye process! Please allow for some slight imperfections that are the result of the hand dyeing process.
This is a perfect gift for a special friend or for yourself
My customers have described my naturally dyed items as eye-catching and desirable. This tunic, in relaxed fit is sized Small or Medium.
