Indigo and mokume shibori cotton tunic

Made with care and passion, each individual item is unique. All of my naturally dyed items are designed and hand dyed, by myself, in my small studio, in central Ontario, Canada.

What is a resist dye?

“Resist dyeing is a term for a number of traditional methods of dyeing textiles with patterns. Methods are used to “resist” or prevent the dye from reaching all the cloth, thereby creating a pattern and ground. The best-known varieties today include tie-dye and batik.” This resist dyeing is also known as “shibori”.

The pattern in this beautiful piece of clothing is organic in appearance and can not be duplicated, when using this technique. I consider my tunics to be works of wearable art and as such, that is how I create them.

Hand dyed items, such as this tunic take much time and effort. Each dye colour is prepared separately and requires a minimum of one hour in the dye pot. This Indigo and mokume shibori cotton tunic was dipped in an Indigo vat three times. The more often an item is dipped into Indigo, the darker the blue becomes (as long as the vat is still active). Prior to dyeing, I stitched the design through both the front and back layers of the tunic. Therefore, the design is identical on both sides of it. Each process is done separately.

Please allow for some slight imperfections that are the result of the hand dyeing process.

Due to the nature of natural dyes, the colours vary in different lighting conditions

This is a perfect gift for a special friend or for yourself. My customers have described my naturally dyed items as eye-catching and desirable
